Deacons

Deacons

The oldest office in the Christian church, the name “deacon” comes from the Greek word for servant. Deacons are called to minister to those in need and to care for people in distress. As ordained officers of the church, they are charged with leading the congregation in works of compassion and mercy for one another and for the world. At First Presbyterian, deacons reach out to members who have lost loved ones and to those who are ill or have difficulty leaving home. They nurture individuals going through life transitions and bring worship opportunities to both private and nursing homes. Deacons coordinate with other caregiving groups to provide concrete assistance to those in need. They host the weekly coffee service and annual celebrations.

There are many opportunities for those interested in getting involved with caregiving work at First Presbyterian:

  • Bring comfort and connection by visiting elderly members in their homes
  • Practice hospitality by serving coffee between Sunday worship services
  • Participate in worship at local nursing homes
  • Celebrate communion with members who are no longer able to attend church
  • Reach out to church members who have lost loved ones
